Scucca - Complete

Scucca

Sceocca, Scucca (Shook-ka). Old English meaning “Demon”

Folktales speak of a Demon Dog haunting the British Iles, from Ireland to Scotland and Devon to Norfolk. Accounts vary from one region to another but these demons are near always depicted the same; Unusually large, black dogs with a thick coat and red eyes.

Some say that the dogs are protectors, providing safety to travellers at night. However, known by different names such as; “The Grim”, “Cu Sith”, “Barghest” and “Black Shuck”, they are more commonly considered violent and dangerous.

It is thought that to see one, is to see Death.

 ::OPEN::

The above is the starting page for my web-based narrative, Scucca. Intially, I was going to display it on an iphone but I've discovered that iWeb (that program we were advised to use) is not as user friendly as the old microsoft office Frontpage. Hyper links above videos don't work unless the viewer is using Safari/Mac OS.

In the end, I did get rid of the final image and let the narrative end on a "To be continued..." cliffhanger.

Below are some of the un-animated pages I used.

Development - Cutting work out

Because some of personal complications I've not been able to work on my project for the past two week. Unfortunately, the problem still remains but I'm working on it again. However, because I've already started working with colour and I don't want to just scrap that work, I've decided to reduce the narrative.

Depending on how much work I can get done from now until the deadline I'll be taking out the False Path for Option 3. Perhaps I'll remove Option 3 all together.

Development

We've been given the option to start project 2 or extend project 1.

I've decided to extend this project. I'm quite please how my drawing style and developed for this project and so I'd like to try and make this interactive narrative a full colour, instead of just monochrome.

The texture on top of this drawing of Amber is unnecessary, I was just fiddling about with looks and styles to use across the comic.

A couple of practise drawings of dogs/wolves. I decided to go with a more wolf like physique for Tobias. While looking at different breeds of dogs, I was struggling to pick out a body structure which I thought was fitting for Tobias; The thick, shaggy coat but also a trim and agile body for a fast but powerful hunter.  At one point, I was considering scrapping the idea of the shaggy coat and styling him off of a doberman as they are a sleek bodied breed of dog which are associated with violence and vicious attacks.

Storyboard

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1tBVyHJExo5qojjkqb6QLt6jsn_uO97_LN2pJAVC3AeQaApVsfJCDF0o3oizcjaGa1ku9uM_LrclHKtH_0sSt25_2oIHziXtT7_6pBGRkX4Hi5gdYk1SnmNx3_KDU0S4OEgDuooYB11DB/s1600/storyboard001

The blue path on the story board shows the narrative true path. The red path shows an optional but false path. Should the user select to follow these paths they will eventually lead back to the options page again.

I've tried to keep dialogue down to a minimum.

Graphic Novel Research.

When we we're given our brief for this project, it was mentioned that we should make our interactive narratives have little to no dialogue.

A long with looking at graphic novels and comics for some insight on panelling and narrative flow, I looked at a graphic novel which had no text. Pandala, written and drawn by Bertrand Hottin. What I noticed when reading Pandala (compared to graphic novels with dialogue) was that I was taking more time to appreciate the art and understand that story world - as there was no text, I had to make that extra effort to work out what was going on. For the most part, I enjoyed this experience however there were times when I was completely at a lost as to what was going on. Running into blocks like that slowed down the narration and ruined the experience.

Pages 9 and 31 from Pandala Vol 2.

Another thing I came to notice was that there were a lot of middle to full body shots within books, and close-ups/head shots used. I assume this is because the need for body language when verbal dialect doesnt exist.

I looked over a number of styles of comics to try and discern the ways artists have shown and emphasised expressions and situations. I was also looking for inspiration as to what art style to try and use for my project as I wanted to challenge myself with this project again.

One of the comics I'm looking at is Brodie's Law. The artwork is by David Bircham and I've admired his style for a few years now. The style he used in Brodie's Law isn't completely realistic but there is enough detail to give it a feel other than just a cartoon drawing. Also, as I'm still not confident with painting/drawing in colour, I found the way David bought colour into the pages helpful for my own work.

Drawing development

I've been struggling with drawing dogs while doing my storyboard. As its the storyboard and I wanted it done quickly but still be legiabl, I needed to develop a way of drawing dogs so I took the help of comic artist Elenawing.

She sent me some images of suggested ways of drawing dogs for storyboarding, giving me some guidelines of their structure.

Sequential Art and Visual Narrative

In today's lecture, in support of our Interactive Narrative project, we were introduced to the "Kuleshov Effect".

The Kuleshov effect is how a viewers perception of what is happening is influenced by the context of the images. In the original Kuleshov experiment, Kuleshov presented a clip to viewers of a an actors expression to three different scenes.

http://www.youtube.com/embed/zUZCPPGeJ1c

It started with a shot of him followed but a shot of food and then a shot of his response.
It continued on to a shot of a child dead/sleeping and then again a shot of his response.
Finally, it showed a shot of a woman sitting in revealing clothing and then a shot of his response.

Those in the study remarked on how amazing the actors abilities were for him to be able to change his expression so slightly and portray different emotions but in fact, the exact same clip of the man was played over again. It was not him changing his expression.

For the first scenario, we assume him to be ravished because of the sight of food.
In the second, we assume him to be a tender man or sad because of the sleeping/dead child.
In the last, we assume him to be lustful because of the provocative woman.

We were also introduce to how sequential presentation influences the viewer.

The two images below are from two separate Miffy books.

Miffy the Artist - The Miffy Group

Miff at School - The Miffy Group

When we see the images on their own, we have a simple narrative of:
Miffy is viewing a painting.
Miffy is drawing.

But when we see them side by side, our minds develop the narrative.

In this image our minds tell us that Miffy is drawing something and then later is having her work displayed on a wall.

Where as in this image our minds are telling us that Miffy saw an painting on a wall and was inspired to do her own drawing.

It was expressed that without all the information our minds automatically fill in the blanks and create their own narratives/understanding of an event so it is important, when we are planning out our comics etc. to make sure we lead our viewers correctly so that they do not lose track and become confused or bored. Angles, positions and content within each panel all play role in achieving this.

Along with this our tutor also discussed semiotics (communicating through pose, signs, expressions etc), lighting, compositions and angles.

Script

With the help of FilmSchoolOnline's script format lesson I expanded the plot outline into a spec script. I'll extend it into a shooting script and a comic script once I've had feedback on the spec script.

Chances made:
  • I've decided to use the term "Scucca" instead of "Shucks" as that is what the character of the Devil would refer to them as.
  • I added in the 3rd choice scenario.

  • EXT. CITY STREET - NIGHT

It is cloudy and the moon is in its last quarter. Tobias, in his dog form, walks along a quiet city street. Ahead Tobias can see two women walking together, one is Jasmine with blonde hair and the other is Amber with brunette hair. The girls bid farewell to each other and take separate paths at an intersection. Jasmine takes a path leading down a poorly lit street and Amber takes the path across an overpass and onto a well lit but still quiet street. Everything becomes red.

    GAME SCREEN

    GAME NARRATIVE
Danger awaits one of these women. Which path will you take?
    Follow the Blonde.
    Follow the Brunette.

BACK TO CITY STREET - FIRST OPTION

Tobias follows Jasmine down most of the long street until everything becomes red again for a brief moment. Chains appear and Tobias is bound by them before being pulled into his own shadow on the ground. Flames blaze all around Tobias and the chains pull tight. A hand points to Tobias.

    THE DEVIL
    (Ominous)
You have failed to protect your charge. Suffer now her pain and let her death forever weigh apon you.

    Amber screams.

    BACK TO GAME SCREEN

    GAME NARRATIVE
Danger awaits one of these women. Which path will you take?
    Follow the Blonde.
    Follow the Brunette.

BACK TO CITY STREET - SECOND OPTION

Tobias follows Amber for a short while until a man appears and walks in her direction. Everything glows a dim red again and Tobias stops, studying the man. As the man walks past Amber, he nods with a smile and she returns it. A few paces after, he stops and calls back to her. Amber turns to him.

    GAME SCREEN

    GAME NARRATIVE
This man could harm the woman. What action will you take?
Wait to see how the man shall move and attack for a chance to go unnoticed by the woman.
Attack the man before he harms the woman and risk being seen by her.

BACK TO CITY STREET - SECOND OPTION

With red eyes,Tobias leaps up at the man, slashing at him and knocking him to the ground. The man tries to fight Tobias off but is unable to. Amber takes a small step forward but stops abruptly at the sight of the Tobias' red eyes. Tobias pins the man to the ground and bites at his neck, ripping at his throat. As the man dies, chains emerge from Tobias and wrap around the man tightly. His body slowly disappears into Tobias' shadow. Amber does nothing for that moment but soon starts to run away. Tobias watches as Amber runs but does nothing to stop her. The Devil laughs maliciously.

    THE DEVIL
    (mockingly)
Well done, Scucca. Indeed this man is a sinner and a soul bound for hell. However, tonight is not his time time join me and I still await another soul. You better hurry.

Tobias' eyes become red again and he chases after the woman.

    10 MINUTES LATER

Amber arrives at a house. Panting and in a panic she takes keys from her bag and opens the front door. Entering the home, she quickly locks the door behind her. Tobias reaches Amber's home but cannot enter. His eyes glow a brighter red as he pounds at the door with his body. Amber screams and chains appear, binding Tobias before he is pulled into his own shadow on the ground. Flames blaze all around Tobias and the chains pull tight. A hand points to Tobias.

    THE DEVIL
    (Ominous)
You have failed to protect your charge. Suffer now her pain and let her death forever weigh apon you.

    Amber screams again.

    BACK TO GAME SCREEN

Attack the man before he harms the woman and risk being seen by her.
Wait to see how the man shall move and attack for a chance to go unnoticed by the woman.

BACK TO CITY STREET - FIRST OPTION

Tobias watches the man, preparing himself to attack t any moment. Amber looks at the man curiously as he hands her a piece of paper. She smiles and points in a direction from where she came. As she does, she notices Tobias. The man nods at Amber and the continue on their separate ways. Tobias' eyes are still red and he continues to follow Amber.

    10 MINUTES LATER

Amber arrives at her front door. She takes out her keys and opens the door. It is dark inside. Everything is a vibrant red.

    GAME SCREEN

    GAME NARRATIVE
This woman is still in danger. If the door closes you will not be able to enter. What will you do?
Attempt to sneak into the house before the door shuts.
Bark at the woman to get her attention.

EXT. FRONT OF AMBER'S HOUSE - FIRST OPTION

Tobias waits for Amber to enter her house. As soon as she does, Tobias attempts to rush in but the door shuts before he is able to.

    GAME NARRATIVE
This woman is still in danger. If the door closes you will not be able to enter. What will you do?
Attempt to sneak into the house before the door shuts.
Bark at the woman to get her attention.

EXT. FRONT OF AMBER'S HOUSE - SECOND OPTION

Tobias barks at Amber just as she enters her home. Amber turns to look at him and appears confused. She looks slightly alarmed but turns away as a light is turned on behind her.

    INT. AMBER'S HALLWAY

A man appears with a stern look on his face. Amber smiles at him for a moment but is soon alarmed again. Holding a large knife, the man grabs Amber and attempts to attack her.

BACK TO THE FRONT OF AMBER'S HOUSE

Tobias snarls and leaps into Amber's house.

    BACK TO AMBER'S HALLWAY

Tobias slashes at the arm of the man which is holding Amber and bites at the arm holding the knife. Amber trembles as she timidly steps away from the scene, hands clutched to her body. She trips on the threshold of her doorway and stumbles back, falling outside and landing on her back. The man tries to fight Tobias off but is unable to. Tobias bites at the mans neck, ripping at his throat. As the man dies, chains emerge from Tobias and wrap around the man tightly. His body slowly disappears into Tobias' shadow.

BACK TO THE FRONT OF AMBER'S HOUSE

Amber does nothing as Tobias looks back at her, his eyes no longer red. Amber sits rigid where she fell, holding her breath and wide eyed as Tobias eventually walks past her. Before he reaches the end of her pathway, Amber shifts to look back at him.

    AMBER
    (weak whisper)
    Thank you.

Tobias stares at her for a moment before leaving her yard.

    END
Note: "Apon" is used on purpose instead of "Upon" due to age of The Devil. However, I'm attempting to develop a way so that there is no text aside from the option screens.

    Looking through the graphic novels

Initial and first Development of Plot

To start off with, I had the following idea:

[[All angles are low except for ones showing the dog. All images are B&W except for ones showing the dog]]
A woman walks down a quiet street at night.
A black haired dog can be seen looking at the woman from afar.
A man walks towards her, seemingly harmless and appears to be on the phone.
Dog shys away, keeping out of sight.
A few moments after the man passes the woman he stops and turns to her, taking something out of his pocket.
[[Screen changes from B&W to Red monochrome. Two options are given.]]

    1st option: Wait.
    2nd option: Attack Man.

Waiting: Man takes out a piece of paper from his pocket and talks on the phone about being lost.
Attacking: Dog attacks and kills an innocent man. He loses track of the woman and so she dies. (failed)

My idea was that there would be one more incident which would result in the woman noticing the Dog and lay down the foundations for the story of how she helps him earn forgiveness. However, I've decieded to add another option before the above one.

[[All angles are low except for ones showing the dog. All images are B&W except for ones showing the dog]]
Two young women are walking down a street. One blonde, the other brunette.
A black haired dog can be seen looking at the women from afar.
[[Screen is in monochrome red, angles still low.]]
The two women take seperate paths. The blonde goes down a dark street, the other crosses an overpass.
    [[Two options are given]]

    1st option: Follow the Blonde.
    2nd option: Follow the Brunette.

Blonde> Dog follows the blonde. [[Scene is B&W for a while until scene becomes red again and a womans scream can be heard]] (failed)
Brunette> Dog follows the brunette until a man walks towards her, seemingly harmless and appears to be on the phone. [Scene is glowing red in varying strength.]]
Dog shys away, keeping out of sight.
A few moments after the man passes the woman, he stops and turns to her, taking something out of his pocket.
    [[Two options are given.]]

    1st option: Wait.
    2nd option: Attack Man.

Waiting: Man takes out a piece of paper from his pocket and talks on the phone about being lost.
Attacking: Dog attacks and kills an innocent man. He loses track of the woman and so she dies. (failed)

It took a while for me to plan out a viable idea for the final, actual attack on the woman. During this time I also changed the incident with the man so that the woman notices him during both options.

Brunette> Dog follows the brunette until a man walks towards her, seemingly harmless.
[[Scene is glowing red in varying strength.]]
Dog shys away, keeping out of sight.
A few moments after the man passes the woman, he stops and turns to her, taking something out of his pocket.
    [[Two options are given.]]

    1st option: Wait.
    2nd option: Attack Man.

Waiting> Man takes out a piece of paper from his pocket and appears to be asking for directions. The woman directs the man and notices the dog with red eyes a small way off.
Woman shrugs the sighting off and continues on her way home.

Attacking> Dog attacks and kills the man.
Woman sees this event and runs off after the mans body vanishes.
Dog is made aware that the man was innocent and that the woman is still in danger.
Woman reaches her home and locks her door behind her.
Dog reaches the house but cannot enter.
    Woman screams(failed)

[[Scene is glowing red in varying strength.]]
Dog continues to follow the woman until she opens the door to her home.
[[Scene is glowing a vibrant red.]]
    Dog barks at he womam.
Woman stops and looks at the dog. She's afraid of it because it seems to have followed her home and the eyes are unaturally red.
[[Light turns on behind the woman]]
A second man appears behind her with a stern look on his face.
Woman looks relieved for a moment but then notices a blade in the mans hand.
Man grabs the woman and attempts to attack her.
Dog attacks the man, killing him.
Dogs eyes are no longer red after the man vanishes.
Woman trembles and backs away from the dog as he walks past her.
Woman whispers a thank you to the dog as he reaches the end of the footpath.
    [[End]]

    Interactive Narrative

My first project for the second term is to create an interactive narrative by either producing my own written work or adapting an existing piece into an interactive form. I've decided to work on my own story based on the myths of the Black Dog of British Folklore.

There are many variations to the myth of the Phantom Dog but it's appearance is largely consistent among them all: A Large dog (about the size of a calf) with black, shaggy fur and red eyes.

There are different names for the phantom such as the Black Shuck, Padfoot, Yell hound and the Gytrash. The nature of the dog also varies. In a lot of the legends, the Black Dog is seen as an omen of death and some state the dog to be a killer itself.

"A weather vane in Bungay Market in Suffolk depicts a black dog and a flash of lighting, it commemorates an event on Sunday the 4th of August 1577. Between nine and ten in the morning while the parishioners of Bungay were at church, a fearful and violent storm broke out, which caused the sky to darken and the church to quake. Suddenly, in the midst of the storm, a black dog appeared within church. Lit by flashes of fire, it ran about the body of the church causing great fear and panic. It passed between two people kneeling at prayer, killing them instantly, and caused another man to shrivel up, severely burned, although he is said to have survived."
    - Mysterious Britain - Phantom Black Dogs

But it has also been said to be a benevolent spirit and one which helps woman and travellers.

" At the entrance of the wood he was joined by a black dog, it pattered beside him until he emerged from the trees, whereupon it disappeared as quickly as it had arrived.

On his return journey through the wood, the dog joined him again on the dark woodland path, and disappeared mysteriously when he emerged. Apparently, some years later, two prisoners condemned to death confessed that they had decided to rob and murder Johnny that night in the wood, but the presence of the large black dog had stopped them."
    - Mysterious Britain - Phantom Black Dogs

We see these dark phantoms appear in literature. A Sherlock Holmes case involved a Phantom Black Hound a family in Devon in "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and one of the characters in J.K Rowlings Harry Potter seems to be heavily influenced by the legend in the form of Sirius Black. Sirius is the name of the Black Dog constellation and Padfoot, a nickname for Sirius when in his animal form of a shaggy haired black dog, is one of the names given to the Phantom. It also directly references the legend when Harry Potter is in his Tea Reading class and encounters the omen of the Black Dog which he confuses Sirius to be.

    My Adaptation

Taking what I've learnt about the various forms of the Black Dog, I've developed my own character.

In my adaptation, Black Shucks (as they shall be referred to due to the Norfolk setting) are men enslaved to the Devil as a punishment for causing the death of a woman. They must walk the roads (of the area their contract is formed) and see to it that any woman in possible danger of malicious intent are bought to safety. At the same time, they are to collect the souls of those who'd do wrong and drag them to hell. Should they fail to protect their charges, they'll be tortured in hell and the pain of the victims will be shared. Those cursed to this fate can only be released when they can truly be forgiven for their crimes.

This combines both suggestions of the Black Shuck; evil and a protector.

My story follows Tobias Howard, a (made up) relative to the Duke of Norfolk. His selfishness and arrogance led to the death of his mother and sister for which he was cursed with becoming a Black Shuck back in the early 18th Century. He roams the city of Norwich and the outskirts along with several other Shucks.

As with most other Shucks, even after 3 centuries as a demon dog, Tobias is still cursed, having not been able to redeem himself although he is less of the selfish and arrogant man he was before.

One night, Tobias is alerted (through the means of his vision turning from B&W to Red) to a woman being in danger. Shucks don't know how a woman is to be harmed so he must follow the woman and act wisely until the event happens. The correct path of the story sees him saving the girl from an attack. If this particular woman dies, the player fails.
